NS has ordered new vehicles for 2028 on CAF.
Which train is to be replaced?
I come from Germany and I love the Netherlands with its trains and its beautiful landscapes.

Those DDNG (that's what the new ones are called) are planned to replace the DDZ units

In addition to replacing the DDZ units, the order aims to expand the number of double decker EMUs.

The DDZ has been problematic. Not only are they quite old (they're refurbished units from the early 90s, with the power cars being a few years younger) and pretty much at the end of their economical life span, they've been acting up the last couple of years too. From vibrations during braking, which lead to the units being stabled during most of 2021, to failure of the automatic coupler (causing combined trains to split in two while running at full speed).

Add the fact that these units were originally built for local services and now pushed as intercity stock, and you can imagine why they're being retired.

But fret not: a unit or two will make it to the national railway museum and into the collections of other preservation societies I'm sure. And once DDNG starts entering service, I'm sure they will be running together for a few years at least; I expect them to retire in the early 2030s.
