BeschrijvingIn 1980 bestelde de NMBS 140 nieuwe 2-ledige elektrische motorstellen bij BN - ACEC. Deze motorstellen, beter gekend als "Breaks" waren een belangrijke evolutie bij de motorstellen op het Belgische spoornet. In tegenstelling tot de oudere motorstel reeksen had de AM80 een automatische koppeling (GF), aërodynamische stuurpost, maximumsnelheid van 160 km/h waardoor de stellen ingezet worden op lange afstandsroutes,… In hun bordeaux livrei toonden zij de lancering van het IC/IR plan in 1984.
Origineel waren de “Breaks” 2-ledige motorstellen die tot 6 stellen aan elkaar gekoppeld worden. Als snel bleek dat het aantal zitplaatsen tijdens de piekuren vrij beperkt werden. Daarom besliste de NMBS begin de jaren ’90 een tussenrijtuig bij te voegen. Dit werd verwezenlijkt door de Centrale Werkplaats van Mechelen tussen 1992 en 1995, en kregen direct ook een moderne livrei grijs met blauwe en rode band, bijgenaamd “Memling’.
De “Breaks” zijn op talrijke routes te vinden op het Belgische net. Eerst waren zij bestemd voor de IC Brussel – Luxemburg, treinen van en naar de kust als IC trein. Later mochten zij ook Brussel-Nationaal-Luchthaven aandoen. Vier stellen (401-404) kregen de opschriften “Brussels-Airport-Express”. Dezer dagen zijn ze ook terug te vinden op de kleinere diensten, terwijl de AM96 de lange afstandstreinen (IC) overneemt.

Compared with the older emu’s, the AM80 had an automatic coupler (GF), aerodynamic drivers cab, maximum speed of 160 km/h so they could be used on long-distant services (IC),… Their bordeaux livery the are a sign for the launch of the IC/IR plan in 1984.
Original the “breaks” were composed by 2 cars (one motorized, the other carriage) and were able to the form a train of maximum 6 units. The SNCB concluded fastly that the “Breaks” had a capacity problem in the peek hours. So the SNCB decided in 1990 to add a intermediate car in all 140 emus. They were all transformed by the AC Mechelen between 1992 and 1995 and received a new modern livery grey with blue and red line, better known as “Memling”
The “Breaks” run services on the whole the Belgian rail network. First they where specially used for the IC Brussels – Luxembourg services, services from and towards the coast as IC train. Later they did the Brussels Airport Express service to the Brussels-National-Airport. Four units (401-404) got the words “Brussels Airport Express” description on the side of the intermediate car. These days you may find them on smaller services, while the AM96 takes over some IC services of the AM80.
